Design Report & Material List

Design Concept

This design layers classic Colonial symmetry with soft, dimensional landscaping to break up the flat brick facade. The deep charcoal shutters, oversized lanterns, and a bold front door create a focal point that feels established yet welcoming.

Key Decisions

  • Defined entry surround: Painted white trim and substantial flanking planters draw the eye to the arched doorway, giving the flat front a sense of depth without structural changes.
  • Oversized lanterns: Scaled-up fixtures (larger than standard builder grade) anchor the entry and provide warm evening ambiance.
  • Curved foundation beds: Soft, layered planting edges interrupt the rigid horizontal lines of the brick, adding year-round greenery with minimal maintenance.
  • Symmetrical seating zones: Matching patio sets on either side of the entry reinforce Colonial balance while creating usable outdoor living space.

Sizing Note

Lanterns should measure roughly one-third the door height (about 20-24" for a standard 80" door) to read properly from the street. Shutters must appear wide enough to "close" over the windows—typically 12-15" for standard double-hung windows.
