Cove-lit plaster volume with walnut storage
The central challenge was transforming a tall, plain-walled room that felt cavernous and underutilized into an intimate, layered space. The design intent uses hidden cove lighting to sculpt the ceiling plane and draw the eye upward, while a continuous walnut credenza under the arched window grounds the room horizontally and provides concealed storage. The plaster-like wall finish absorbs and reflects light softly, eliminating the need for additional wall decoration. Visible results include the glowing ceiling perimeter, the unified material palette of warm wood and textured neutrals, and furniture scaled to leave the room's architecture dominant. This approach respects the existing shell while adding perceptual warmth and functional storage.
Key Decisions
- Continuous cove lighting at ceiling perimeter — creates ambient glow that eliminates harsh shadows and visually lowers the tall ceiling to human scale without permanent structural intervention.
- Low walnut credenza beneath the arched window — provides closed storage for media and clutter, establishes a horizontal datum that balances vertical wall height, and frames the window as a composed vignette.
- Clustered nesting coffee tables — preserves flexible floor area in the compact seating zone while offering adaptable surface area for daily use and entertaining.
- Textured bouclé sofa in warm neutral — introduces tactile softness and visual weight that competes with the architecture without overwhelming; the tone bridges wall and wood tones.

Implementation Note
The cove lighting requires a minimum 4-6 inch setback from the wall-ceiling junction to achieve the floating glow effect visible here; attempting this with surface-mounted LED strips at the corner will produce a harsh line rather than diffused wash. Verify existing ceiling height allows this drop, or plan a shallow bulkhead build-out using furring strips and drywall—still non-structural, but adds $200-400 in materials and labor.
