Design Report & Material List

Design Concept

This design layers warm, tailored built-ins against the preserved 1920s architectural shell to create a grounded, symmetrical focal point. The greige cabinetry bridges the black-green fireplace and cream upholstery, achieving that elusive transitional balance between period character and relaxed California living.

Key Decisions

  • Low built-in symmetry: The 30-inch height keeps sightlines open to the fireplace while adding resale-friendly storage that feels custom, not bulky.
  • Warm greige cabinetry: SW Accessible Beige or similar reads as intentional contrast against Simply White walls without competing with the fireplace.
  • Brass accents throughout: Sconces, hardware, and lamp share one metal finish to unify the room's vertical axis.
  • Textured neutrals: Linen upholstery, jute rug, and ceramic vessels add depth without pattern overload, letting the architecture breathe.

Sizing Note

The built-ins are deliberately low (30" height, 18" depth) to maintain the room's original proportions and ensure the fireplace remains visually dominant. If your fireplace wall measures differently, maintain 12-18 inches of breathing room between cabinet top and sconce bottom for this layered effect.
