Reclaimed-Wood Mantel Hearth Wall
The central challenge was unifying a tall, angled-ceiling Living Room around one commanding feature while keeping every change reversible. The design anchors the room on a stacked-stone fireplace with a heavy reclaimed-wood mantel, then extends that material language outward through vertical plank paneling and exposed ceiling beams. This creates vertical rhythm that draws the eye upward and balances the soaring white ceiling. All changes are soft: the wood paneling reads as architectural but installs as non-structural boards; furniture, textiles, and lighting complete the rustic narrative without touching flooring, walls, or the skylight. The result is a cohesive cabin-inspired retreat that feels built-in yet packs up if you move.
Key Decisions
- Asymmetrical seating pair flanking the hearth — two matching wood-frame armchairs with light upholstery face the fireplace at a slight angle, encouraging conversation and directing attention to the stone surround without blocking the TV above.
- Low-profile plank coffee table centered on the rug — its rough-hewn finish echoes the mantel and keeps sightlines open across the compact floor plate, while the tray of pillar candles adds movable warmth.
- Iron lantern sconces bracketing the TV niche — these cast downward light that grazes the wood paneling, adding shadow depth and period character without requiring electrical rewiring if plug-in versions are used.
- Distressed Persian-style area rug defining the seating zone — the faded pattern and fringe edge soften the wood floor and acoustically dampen the high ceiling, grounding all furniture in one tonal field.

Implementation Note
Measure your fireplace wall width before ordering the mantel: the shelf should extend at least 6 inches past the stone surround on each side to visually anchor the TV above, but must not crowd the sconce placement. A common mistake is mounting the mantel too high; keep the top surface approximately 54 inches from the floor so decorative objects remain in comfortable sightlines from seated positions.
