Design Concept

Vertical Sleep-and-Study Bunk

The central challenge was fitting two beds, a desk, storage, and a pet bed into a modest rectangular room without crowding the floor plane. By stacking sleeping levels and anchoring a wall-hung desk perpendicular to the bunks, the design frees circulation along the entry wall and window side. The charcoal-and-white bunk frame becomes the room's visual anchor, while the fold-down desk and rolling seat tuck into leftover corner space. A lidded storage bench at the foot of the lower bunk doubles as seating and concealed linen storage. The overall effect is a disciplined, modern shared Bedroom where every element serves at least two functions and nothing blocks the light path from the window.

Key Decisions

  • Stacked twin-over-twin bunk in charcoal finish — places two sleep surfaces in the footprint of one bed, leaving floor area for movement and the desk zone.
  • Wall-mounted fold-down desk with bracket supports — creates a study surface that disappears visually when closed, preserving the room's open feel along the left wall.
  • Lidded upholstered storage bench in sage green — adds seating, pet sleeping space below, and hidden storage for bedding or seasonal items at the bunk foot.
  • Floating shelves above the desk — keeps books and small items off the work surface without consuming floor space or interfering with the upper bunk rail.

Budget Snapshot

CategoryEst. Cost
Bunk bed frame and mattresses$550-1,100
Desk, chair, and shelving system$180-380
Storage bench and textiles$120-280

Implementation Note

Confirm the upper bunk's ceiling clearance before ordering: the top sleeper needs at least 30 inches between mattress surface and ceiling for safe sit-up space, and the wall-mounted TV arm must clear the top rail by several inches to avoid head contact when climbing the ladder.
