Design Concept
Linen-Draped Vertical Living Room
The central challenge was balancing this 18-plus-foot ceiling volume so it feels inhabited rather than hollow. The design intent uses full-height linen drapery on the right wall to echo the verticality of the windows and stairwell, while a wide-area wool-blend rug anchors the seating group to the expansive oak floor. Muted color enters through the landscape artwork's soft sage and umber tones, the piano's warm walnut case, and the oatmeal-to-taupe gradation across upholstery and textiles. The glass bowl pendant provides evening glow without visual weight. The practical value is a room that reads as finished and layered at conversation level, then rewards upward glances with intentional vertical rhythm. Constraints included preserving all fixed elements—flooring, railing structure, window placements—while replacing only movable components within standard budget limits.
Key Decisions
- Oversized area rug with furniture fully aboard — prevents the seating group from floating lost on the wide plank floor and defines the conversation zone.
- Double-layered window treatment: sheer under linen — the existing vertical blinds stay functional for light control while new linen panels add softness and frame the tall windows.
- Upright piano placed against the far wall — fills the deep room's secondary focal point, balances the stair mass on the left, and introduces warm wood tone against cool walls.
- Low-profile round coffee table — keeps sightlines open across the rug and avoids competing with the pendant's downward presence.

Implementation Note
Measure ceiling height before ordering the pendant chain; many standard fixtures ship with 6 feet of chain, but this volume needs a 30-36 inch drop to hang at correct proportion above the coffee table. If your ceiling is sloped or the junction box is off-center, a swivel canopy adapter runs $15-25 and prevents a crooked bowl.
