Design brief

The homeowner sought a calmer, more functional living space in a century home with significant existing character. Goals included reducing visual clutter through smarter storage, improving lighting warmth and layers, right-sizing the coffee table, adding a modest TV and low storage near the piano window, and selecting window treatments appropriate to the period architecture.

Design Concept

Rounded Ottoman and Layered Lamp Lighting

The central problem was visual heaviness from an oversized table and single-source lighting competing with rich historic trim. The design intent was to lighten the seating area physically and visually while amplifying warmth. A compact rounded storage ottoman replaces the former coffee table, improving circulation and hiding essentials. A floor lamp with a warm fabric shade supplements natural light and an existing overhead fixture, creating evening depth without altering wiring. The sofa and armchair remain anchored in conversation with the dining room opening, preserving the home's original spatial logic. Dark wood trim becomes a unifying frame rather than a visual weight against lighter textiles and warm metallics.

Key Decisions

  • Rounded storage ottoman — eliminates sharp corners in a tight circulation path and stows throws, remotes, and pet supplies out of sight.
  • Floor lamp with drum shade beside the dining opening — adds ambient fill without ceiling work and balances light across the connected rooms.
  • Compact wall-mounted TV on the right wall — keeps the piano window wall clear for future low storage while providing viewing from the sofa.
  • Neutral textured throws and pillows — soften the seating visually and invite use without adding pattern competition against wood grain.

Implementation Note

Measure the ottoman diameter against the rug and sofa clearance before purchasing: 24 inches suits tighter circulation, while 28 inches needs at least 18 inches of walkable space on all sides to avoid blocking the path to the dining room.
