Dining Table Size Calculator
Choose a starting table size for 4, 6 or 8 people, or check a table you already have. See the space needed for chairs and circulation.
Suggested table sizes favor roomy seating; exact capacity depends on the table and chairs. One allowance covers chairs and circulation. The starting value is 3 ft (0.9144 m). Measure to obstructions, including other furniture.

Dining table size for 4, 6 and 8 people
Starting sizes are based on furniture guidance, with the roomier end of rectangular ranges selected. They are suggestions, not a certified seating capacity. Chair width, table legs, place settings and whether you use the ends all matter.
| Seats | Rectangular starting size | Round starting diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 48 × 36 in | 48 in |
| 6 | 72 × 36 in | 60 in |
| 8 | 87 × 40 in | 72 in |
Round vs rectangular table sizes
Round tables can make movement easier in a square space. Rectangular tables often work better in a long room. West Elm describes 42–48 inch round tables for four and 60 inch tables for six to eight. Roomagic uses 72 inches for eight as a roomier planning choice; confirm the actual product and chairs.
Room size and chair clearance
West Elm suggests 3 feet of clear space on each side for pulling out chairs or walking behind seated people. Enter one total clearance per side; do not add that allowance twice. Measure from the nearest obstruction, including a sideboard, rather than the wall behind it.
How to measure the usable dining area
Measure the clear rectangle where the table and chairs will go. Exclude doors, cabinets, circulation routes and furniture that stays. The sketch checks a centered envelope in either orientation. It does not model irregular walls, banquettes, door arcs or accessibility requirements.
Table fit: a worked example
A 1.8 × 0.9 m table with 0.9 m of clearance on every side needs 3.6 × 2.7 m. A 3.2 × 2.6 m room fails in both orientations. Consider a smaller table or a different layout; reducing clearance changes the use conditions, not just the answer.
Frequently asked questions
What size dining table seats 6?
A 60–72 inch rectangular table is a common starting range in West Elm’s guide; this tool begins at 72 inches. A 60 inch round table is another starting choice. Check chair width and table-leg positions before committing.
How much space is needed behind chairs?
The initial setting is 3 feet (0.9144 m) per side. You can edit it, but a smaller envelope can prevent chair pull-out or passing behind a seated person. Check actual use and local accessibility needs.
Does rotating the table help?
Sometimes. The calculator checks both orientations of the table plus its clearance. A round table has the same footprint in either orientation.
Does this calculate how many chairs fit an existing table?
The existing-table mode checks the table’s room envelope. It does not certify chair capacity from perimeter alone. Measure your chairs and confirm where table legs or pedestals interfere.
