The first suggestion is the smallest listed rug that covers your furniture footprint and fits your wall border. Rectangle checks do not include doors, obstacles or exact furniture positions. Verify dimensions in the room before buying.

What size rug do I need?

Start with the furniture you want the rug to connect, then check your usable room dimensions. This calculator finds the smallest listed retail size that meets both your footprint and your chosen wall border. It also compares a 90-degree rotation. The smallest size is a starting point, not the only attractive choice.

Living room and sectional placement

For a front-legs layout, measure the area you want to cover under the front legs and coffee table. For an all-legs layout, enter the complete seating group footprint. Include the return of a sectional. The tool adds your chosen extension around that rectangle; it does not infer hidden sofa dimensions.

Rug size for queen and king beds

Bed presets use US mattress dimensions, not the outside of the bed frame. Replace them with your measured frame. The lower-two-thirds option covers two thirds of the bed length plus the chosen foot extension, with extension on both sides. Full-bed coverage adds extension around all four sides. Nightstands are not included automatically.

Rug size under a dining table

Measure the table, including any leaves you regularly use. Ruggable suggests at least 24 inches (about 61 cm) beyond every table edge so pulled-out chairs can stay on the rug. This is an editable starting allowance. Check your actual chair pull-out distance and rug pile before buying.

Standard rug sizes in feet and centimeters

These are retail examples rather than universal product sizes. Metric dimensions below are conversions of the listed feet; check the product label.

How the recommendation is calculated

Dining example: a 1.8 × 0.9 m table with 0.61 m extension on each side needs a rug footprint of 3.02 × 2.12 m. An 8 × 10 ft rug can cover it when rotated. With a 0.30 m wall border, the room needs at least 3.648 × 3.0384 m for that rug orientation. Smaller rooms receive a conflict, not a reduced allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Is an 8 × 10 rug big enough for a queen bed?

Often for a lower-bed layout, but the frame, extension and room border decide. Enter the actual frame dimensions and compare full-bed with lower-two-thirds coverage. The result checks your measurements, not the bed name alone.

Should sofa legs sit on the rug?

Front legs on the rug can connect a seating group; all legs on needs a larger footprint. Ruggable also describes a no-legs layout for smaller rugs. Measure the layout you intend instead of using the entire room area.

Can I use a rug pad?

Yes, if compatible with your rug and floor. Follow the pad maker’s sizing and care instructions. This tool recommends the rug size, not a universal pad size.

Does the preview guarantee the rug dimensions?

No. The measured sketch checks rectangular footprints. An AI preview shows a design direction; verify dimensions, door movement and placement in the actual room.
