Living Room: Low oak hearth with leather center

Case summary

This Living Room design delivers a warm, collected vintage-eclectic atmosphere anchored by a low oak media console with integrated electric fireplace, a round leather ottoman, and a richly patterned Persian-style rug. The 1910 architectural shell remains intact while new textiles, lighting, and furniture create layered, approachable character at a standard renovation budget.

Design brief

The homeowner sought to replace bulky furniture with lower, warmer pieces that respect the room's historic bones. They wanted richer color through vintage textiles and art, better lighting layers, and a functional media setup that doesn't dominate the space. The goal was personal, lived-in warmth without drifting into neutral territory.

Design Concept

Low oak hearth with leather center

The room's central challenge was a bulky TV cabinet that interrupted sightlines and circulation. Replacing it with a long, low warm-oak console with integrated electric fireplace drops the visual weight, restores horizontal calm, and creates a functional heat source. The round tobacco-brown leather ottoman anchors the seating arrangement without the rigidity of a rectangular coffee table, while the vintage Persian-style rug in muted brick, olive, and cream unifies the dark sectional and green accent chair. Brass bird sculptures regrouped above the media wall add collected personality, and a single large warm-toned artwork above the sofa balances the gallery wall opposite. Simple linen curtains soften the windows without competing with the new plantation shutters.

Key Decisions

  • Low-profile media console — reduces visual bulk, maintains walking clearance, and integrates heat without separate appliances.
  • Round leather ottoman — softens the linear sectional and improves circulation between seating pieces.
  • Vintage-style Persian rug — introduces the requested warm palette and grounds all furniture legs for cohesion.
  • Layered warm lighting — brass-based table and floor lamps with cream shades replace cool overhead dependence.

Implementation Note

Measure the media wall length before ordering the console; the piece should span most of the wall but leave at least 6 inches clearance from the doorway trim for comfortable passage. Electric fireplace inserts in furniture units typically require a standard outlet—confirm placement avoids visible cord runs across the oak floor.
