Oversized Plant Console Focal Wall
The central problem was a Living Room organized around an absent screen, leaving a dominant wall without purpose. The design intent converts this void into an active green focal point using a large potted tropical specimen on a low console, flanked by task and ambient lighting. This preserves wall space, adds vertical organic form, and balances the horizontal weight of the sectional. The practical value is a calmer visual field that still anchors furniture placement. Constraints included existing hardwood, fixed windows, and an entry door limiting layout options. The visible result is a room that reads as intentional and complete without any media equipment.
Key Decisions
- Dark low console beneath the plant — grounds the tall foliage, provides hidden storage, and creates a horizontal datum that echoes the sofa's length.
- Arc floor lamp behind sectional — delivers overhead reading light without ceiling modification, defining the lounge zone independently from the entry area.
- Compact desk in the alcove — exploits an underused corner for work function without interrupting the main circulation path or sightline to the plant wall.
- Neutral distressed-look area rug — visually unifies seating and desk zones while softening the dark hardwood acoustically and texturally.

Implementation Note
Measure your console depth before selecting the planter: a pot deeper than 14 inches will overhang standard 15-16 inch console tops and risk tipping. If using a live tropical plant, place a waterproof saucer inside a decorative outer pot rather than drilling the console, which preserves the furniture finish and allows seasonal rotation of smaller specimens.
