Calacatta Viola Marble Hearth Wall
The central challenge was a Living Room lacking architectural presence and clear social function. The design intent creates immediate visual gravity through a floor-to-ceiling marble fireplace wall, then organizes all activity around it. The Calacatta Viola's soft burgundy veining establishes the entire color story, while the perpendicular sofa placement and paired curved chairs enforce intimate conversation. Practical value lies in performance fabrics and accessible vintage-styled pieces that withstand daily use without preciousness. Constraints included preserving windows, doors, and flooring boundaries; the visible result is a room that reads as architecturally significant yet composed entirely of movable, replaceable elements.
Key Decisions
- Perpendicular sofa orientation — positions occupants to face both the fireplace and each other, eliminating the common "all-facing-a-screen" layout and activating the room's full depth.
- Ceiling-height pinch-pleat drapery — extends the visual height of standard windows and softens daylight, with brass rods echoing the lantern and floor lamp metalwork for cohesion.
- 9x12 vintage-style Persian rug — anchors all seating legs on a single textile plane, eliminating the floating-furniture effect and defining the conversation zone within the larger room.
- Oversized antique brass floor lamp — balances the fireplace wall's vertical mass with a second tall brass element, providing task lighting without requiring hardwired changes.

Implementation Note
Confirm the 9x12 rug can accommodate all furniture legs before purchasing; in this layout, the front legs of the sofa and both chairs must rest fully on the rug, requiring approximately 8-9 feet of clear width in front of the fireplace. A common mistake is sizing down to 8x10, which leaves chairs half-on and visually fragments the seating group.
