Design Concept
Fluted Walnut Table on Medallion Rug
The central challenge in this attic Living Room is the low, angular ceiling that visually fragments the seating area. The design intent was to create a single, quiet focal point that draws the eye downward and horizontally, compressing the room's perceived height into a warm, grounded plane. A large low-pile Turkish-inspired rug with sage, terracotta, rust, taupe, and cream medallions provides that unifying field, while a round dark-walnut table with a fluted pedestal base introduces sculptural weight without the sharp corners that would fight the sloped walls. The restrained cushion palette echoes the rug's muted tones, preventing the yellow accents from competing with the green curtains and wood flooring. The result is practical circulation on the right, front-leg seating stability on the rug, and an uncluttered warmth that reads as intentional rather than accumulated.
Key Decisions
- Oversized vintage-pattern rug — large enough for sectional and chaise front legs to rest on it, visually expanding the floor plane and defining the seating zone without blocking the right-side walkway.
- Round fluted walnut coffee table — softer silhouette suits angled ceilings better than rectangular forms; pedestal base frees leg room and allows tighter placement to the sectional.
- Muted terracotta-and-sage cushions — limited to two, they repeat rug tones to quiet the previous high-contrast accents and reinforce the calm eclectic mood.

Implementation Note
Measure the rug placement carefully before unrolling: the front legs of both the main sectional and the chaise must sit fully on the rug, but the rug's right edge should stop short of the wall opening to preserve the circulation path. A common mistake is centering the rug on the room rather than on the seating footprint, which leaves the chaise legs off the rug and breaks the unified ground plane.
