Herringbone Oak Lantern Focal Room
The central problem was a forgettable, dated shell that would undermine any furniture investment. The design intent creates a self-finished, gallery-like Living Room where the flooring pattern and overhead lantern do the decorative work, eliminating pressure to fill walls and corners immediately. Warm honey-toned chevron oak adds visual movement and period-appropriate craft; the antique brass lantern anchors vertical attention and casts flattering, social light. Flat plaster overhead removes texture competition. The visible result is a room that feels intentionally complete even when empty, giving the homeowner flexibility to acquire quality pieces slowly rather than rushing to cover flaws.
Key Decisions
- Herringbone over straight plank — the chevron pattern draws the eye through the room's length, visually connecting the fireplace wall to the French doors and making the empty space feel designed rather than vacant.
- Antique brass lantern at center — scale and metal warmth bridge traditional mantel architecture with cleaner transitional lines; four exposed bulbs provide ambient glow without needing table lamps during furnishing phases.
- Flat plaster ceiling — eliminates shadow-catching texture, reflects light evenly across the pale walls, and signals intentional finish quality even in an unfurnished state.

Implementation Note
Confirm your ceiling junction box is centered to the room, not just to a former fan location, before plaster work begins—relocating electrical after skim coating requires cutting and patching finished plaster.
