Design brief

The homeowner sought to maximize every inch of a small bathroom with streamlined shelving divisions beside the sink, a new mirror, and a vanity base that feels light rather than bulky. They wanted minimal visual weight while accommodating full-size toiletries—shampoo, soap, toilet paper, and toothpaste—within the existing generous pantry volume, favoring a minimalist approach throughout.

Design Concept

Floating Vanity with Tiered Storage

The central challenge is a narrow bathroom where floor space disappears quickly. The design intent is to lift storage off the floor and organize it vertically, preserving open walking area while keeping essentials within arm's reach. A wall-hung vanity with two smooth drawers eliminates leg-room bulk, while the mirrored cabinet above and open shelf beside it create three storage zones at different heights. The warm wood-look finish against large neutral tiles maintains midcentury modern restraint without darkening the room. The shower's existing large-format tile and mosaic floor remain untouched, letting the vanity zone become the deliberate focal point. Visible result: a breathing, uncluttered small bathroom where nothing sits on the floor except the toilet.

Key Decisions

  • Wall-mounted vanity with dual drawers — frees floor area for easier cleaning and visual expansion in tight quarters.
  • Mirrored cabinet with open side shelf — combines reflection, concealed storage, and daily-use display in one vertical unit.
  • Minimal hardware and flat drawer fronts — reduces visual noise consistent with midcentury modern restraint and small-space psychology.

Implementation Note

Verify wall stud locations before mounting the vanity and mirrored cabinet; floating units in bathrooms often miss studs and require toggle anchors rated for 75+ pounds, especially when drawers will hold multiple full-size bottles. A common mistake is skipping this step, leading to sagging or pulled drywall within months.
